Milk Carton

I used to know this little girl
who enjoyed life and never feared the dark
She beat the shit out of boys
The bastards that attempted to beat her in tether ball
or called her a wimp because her legs looked liked toothpicks

Man could she she run
Run faster than the squirrels
and always found the best hiding spots during the dangerous games
Such as hide and seek or stuck in the mud
This bright young gal would flip all over the school yard
and swing higher than the monkey bars

She'd jump from the highest point of flight
and land flat on her feet
Smiling and laughing
Daring anyone to beat her height
Well, I met this same little girl
30 years later
And she wasn't as happy as she use to be
Come to find out the seekers found her
Left her with bruises and marks
Allowed her to be labeled a whore

Even when she hid her darkest spots
She eventually understood
that she could not escape her past
The boys became men
and proved that she was not as smart as she thought
Her eyes reflected many heights that she had reached
yet now when she fell
She landed on her knees

She somehow became broken by life
Life was taken from her
Simply because she forgot that little girl
That strong naïve girl she used to be
Tears of happiness turned to sobs of grief
She was gone
and even though that little girl
The one who craved dreams as the years went by
never really disappeared
She was never found
because she eventually became forgotten
